There is so much written about leadership skills, but the one largely unmentioned one which will be essential in the 'new normal' is 'trust.' We have to discard our old 'governance' and 'control' based approaches to management and move to one where we enable our employees to perform in self directing/self managing teams.
This will require leaders to be:
a) clear about expectations (the outcomes we expect)
b) focused on providing coaching and development (a large part of how we should spend our time)
c) continuously engaged in providing constructive feedback (confident in our management of relationships)
d) supportive when failures occur (drawing 'lessons learned' rather than 'punishing')
e) comfortable in our own capabilities as leaders (not threatened for our own future)
This journey needs to start now!
